Why use intrinsically safe encoders?

Intrinsically safe optical encoders, when applied with the appropriate IS barrier, will not cause ignition or explosions when operated in volatile environments such as those containing ignitable vapors, liquids, flammable gases, dust, or fiber. Intrinsically Safe encoders have many advantages over Explosion Proof encoders which allow an explosion to occur but contain the explosion. In addition, since Explosion Proof Encoders generally contain an encoder within a second housing the Intrinsically Safe encoder is frequently less expensive to procure and is more reliable.
