What is a shaft encoder used for?

A shaft encoder is used for applications that require the encoder to be isolated from motor noise and/ or mechanical vibration. A shaft encoder uses a mechanical coupling to attach the encoder shaft to a motor shaft and typically takes up more space than other mounting styles.

How do you mount a hollow-shaft encoder?

To mount a hollow shaft encoder you will want to follow a few simple steps. Begin by checking and cleaning your mating shaft. Next, install the tether on your encoder. Slide the encoder on the motor shaft. Secure the tether to the mounting face. Finally, tighten encoder clamp to mating shaft.

What is a thru-bore encoder?

A thru-shaft or thru-bore encoder are alternative names for hollow shaft encoders. As the name implies, the thru-bore encoder housing design has a complete bore opening allowing the motor shaft to mount through the middle of the encoder. Unlike a blind-hollowshaft or hubshaft encoder, you will be able to visually see through a thru-bore encoder.
