What is BiSS?
BiSS stands for Bi-directional Synchronous Serial interface, and is an open communications protocol for sensor data transmission that requires no user license fees.
BiSS is the first all-digital encoder protocol specifically designed for point-to-point servomotor to drive feedback. With its high data transmission speed of up to 10MHz, it is perfectly suited to motor commutation chores, without the necessity for analog sine and cosine outputs.
BiSS Architecture
A key feature of BiSS is its simplicity. Users already familiar with SSI (Synchronous Serial Interface) will appreciate its hardware compatibility with SSI; two clock lines, two data lines, and power and common are all that’s needed for hookup. BiSS can be used in simple point-to-point applications (as in motor/drive), or in master/multiple slave configurations.
BiSS Partners
Many motor and drive manufacturers have already adopted BiSS into their product offering. With the popularity of BiSS increasing, more manufacturers are signing up each year.

BiSS Advantages
- Open protocol means no user license fees are required
- High data transmission speed of up to 10MHz
- Fast update rates up to 100kHz
- Fully digital—no additional analog sine or cosine outputs mean increased noise resistance & lower installed cost
- No complex bus conversion electronics mean high operating temperatures are possible
- Fast update + high resolution = quicker reaction to position changes at low speeds
- Auto-zeroing feature requires no extra wires and makes motor commutation synchronization easy
- Adjustable clock frequency combined with propagation compensation allows for long cable runs
